Save Money by Making Your Own Toddler Halloween Costumes

By the time you child enters the toddler years outfitting them for Halloween by buying toddler costumes from a store can be a rather expensive business. After all, they will wear this year’s toddler Halloween costumes just once or twice so making your own might be a better idea.

Making your own Halloween costumes does not have to involve having the design and sewing capabilities of a Project Runway contestant, just a little imagination and some fairly inexpensive materials. Many of the elements of a good toddler Halloween are probably already available in your home already.

Homemade Toddler Halloween Costumes Ideas

Cuddly Critters – Animal themed toddler Halloween costumes are some of the easiest and most affordable to make at home yourself. For instance to make a rabbit costume for Halloween all you really need to do is affix several cottonballs (or one large one) to the rear of a pink, white or gray pair of footed pajamas and staple some bunny ears cut out of cardboard onto a headband. Dipping into your make up bag you can add whiskers and a pink or black nose to your toddlers face at the last minute.

The same basic technique can then be tweaked to create dog, cat or mouse costumes and this is a quick and easy way to transform your toddler for Halloween fun.

When I Grow Up – Does your toddler want to be a doctor when they grow up? This is an easy toddler Halloween costume to make. All you need is an old adults white shirt with your child’s name written on one side with a permanent marker. Add a toy stethoscope and a “fake” hospital ID (you can make one easily from one of the many templates you can find online) and your child is all set for trick or treating.

Many toddler girls dream of being a ballerina at this stage in their lives and this is another of the easiest toddler Halloween costumes to make. A basic leotard can be purchased for just a few dollars at stores like Wal Mart. You can make that basic leotard a tutu by stapling or tulle, netting, or organza to a fabric belt or the elastic waistband cut from a no-longer needed skirt or pair of pants.

Add some dramatic ballerina style make up and your dancing princess will be ready to go. Real ballet shoes are not really practical for outdoor trick or treating so flats are more practical.

Toddler Halloween Costumes Safety – These are just a few toddler Halloween costumes ideas, search around your local library or online and you will find many more. There are a few safety precautions you should take when choosing an toddler Halloween costume – store bought or home made though. Try to avoid masks as they obstruct a little kids vision and if your toddler’s Halloween costume is dark in color attach some glow-in-the-dark strips or reflective tape for added safety if you will be trick or treating after dark.
