Once a child begins to be able to climb out of their crib (and it always seems to happen almost overnight) or reaches a height of about 35 inches is is time for them to leave their crib behind and graduate to a big kid bed.

Many parents at this point do choose to purchase special toddler beds. These beds almost always come with bed rails for toddlers as a part of the design. Bed rails for toddlers are essential pieces of safety equipment, especially when a child is just making the transition from crib to bed. They are however only good if they are installed properly.
